MINNEAPOLIS — Chisholm hosts two National Multiple Sclerosis Society, Minnesota Chapter events in 2008. The events raise funds to support programs and services for the estimated 9,000 people with multiple sclerosis in Minnesota and western Wisconsin and fund research for a cure.
Walk MS: Christopher & Banks Chisholm Walk presented by Anchor Bank
The Walk MS: Christopher & Banks Chisholm Walk presented by Anchor Bank is held from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday, May 4, at Jim’s Sports Club Bar and Grill. Although there is no pledge minimum for Walk MS, participants are required to raise pledges. Participants in the Chisholm walk choose a one- or five-mile route.
Including the Chisholm walk, there are 17 walks held across Minnesota and western Wisconsin. This year the 21st annual Walk MS is expected to raise a total of more than $2 million to support programs and services for people with multiple sclerosis in Minnesota and western Wisconsin and research to find a cure. Bike MS: Star Tribune The Ride Across Minnesota
Chisholm is also a first-year host city for the 19th annual Bike MS: Star Tribune TRAM, a five-day bike ride July 20 to 25. This year, The Ride Across Minnesota takes cyclists through Minnesota’s Iron Range and the North Shore of Lake Superior. Cyclists leave from Grand Rapids, Monday, July 21, and head to Chisholm along the Mesabi Trail. Day two of the ride features a loop through George Washington State Forest and Superior National Forest and back to Chisholm for a second overnight. After departing from Chisholm, participants ride through Biwabik and Two Harbors before crossing the finish line at the University of Minnesota-Duluth Campus Friday, July 25.
The National MS Society, Minnesota Chapter anticipates more than 1,000 cyclists will bike to create a world free of MS at the 2008 Bike MS: Star Tribune TRAM and raise more than $1 million.
Bike MS is fully supported and noncompetitive. All roads and trails on the route are hand picked by the National MS Society, Minnesota Chapter. Rest stops with snacks, beverages, support vans and first aid are located every 10 to 15 miles. At the overnights, host towns provide food, camping and entertainment. A registration fee and $300 minimum pledge are required to participate. For more information, visit http://www.bikems.org/ or call 1-800-582-5296.
About Walk MS and Bike MS events
The National MS Society believes that moving is not just something you can or can’t do, but rather is who you are. This is why we sponsor events like Walk MS and Bike MS — to raise funds for research, as well as comprehensive programs and services for people with MS — moving closer to a world free of MS. Other 2008 Minnesota Chapter walk and bike events include Challenge Walk MS: Twin Cities, a three-day, 50-mile walk in the Twin Cities, Sept. 12 to 14; Bike MS: Allianz Twin Cities Ride, a one-day, 30- or 60-mile ride in Maplewood, Minn., May 10; and Bike MS: Larkin Hoffman MS 150 Ride, a 150-mile ride from Duluth to the Twin Cities, June 6 to 8.
